Programming a song in Avolites involves matching lighting cues to the natural dynamics of the music, ensuring smooth transitions and an engaging worship experience. A structured workflow helps to efficiently program and refine lighting cues while maintaining flexibility for live execution.
Creating Dynamic Lighting for Each Section
Before programming, listening to the song is key to understanding its energy shifts. The intro and quieter moments often benefit from subtle lighting, such as desaturated colors and soft backlighting. For brighter sections like choruses, intensity increases, with additional movement, gobos, and effects enhancing the energy. Using different palettes for top and bottom fixtures ensures that the lighting supports the stage setup without blinding the congregation.
Recording Cues and Setting Transitions
Cues are recorded into a cue list and assigned to a playback fader, allowing seamless transitions between sections. Legends and labels keep cues organized for quick access. Fade-in times are adjusted to ensure smooth transitions, preventing harsh lighting changes. Mark cues are used to preposition lights in darkness, so fixtures are ready for their next look without visible movement.
Refining the Playback Experience
Once programmed, running through the cue list allows for fine-tuning. Adjusting gobo focus, prism effects, and fade times ensures cues align naturally with the song’s progression. By structuring cues methodically, volunteers and operators can confidently execute lighting changes without needing to make manual adjustments in real time.
