DMX output in Avolites is the process of sending control data from the console to the lighting fixtures. Whether using physical DMX ports or network-based protocols like Art-Net and Streaming ACN, correctly configuring DMX ensures the lighting rig responds as expected.

Assigning DMX Outputs

Once fixtures are patched into the show file, DMX output must be assigned:

Physical DMX Ports – The console’s onboard XLR outputs can be mapped to different DMX universes.

Art-Net – A network-based protocol that transmits DMX data over Ethernet, commonly used for large-scale rigs and media servers.

Streaming ACN (sACN) – Another Ethernet-based protocol that provides more efficient DMX distribution across networked lighting systems.

DMX universes can be routed to specific output ports, allowing different signal types to be used simultaneously. For example, a church may use sACN for house lighting while controlling a media server with Art-Net.

Configuring Network DMX Output

For network-based DMX, proper IP addressing is essential to prevent conflicts:

Static IPs should be assigned to networked DMX devices to ensure a stable connection.

• The DMX Settings menu allows output assignments to be changed in real time.

• The Network Settings menu is used to configure IP addresses and subnet masks to match all connected devices.

By default, Avolites consoles send Art-Net and sACN over all network interfaces, which can cause unintended conflicts. Limiting each protocol to a specific network adapter ensures clean signal distribution.

Testing and Verifying DMX Output

To confirm that DMX is outputting correctly:

• Use the Locate button to send a hard value to all channels, ensuring fixtures respond.

• Check the DMX Universe Usage Indicator to verify how many channels are occupied.

• Review the DMX Monitor Window to see live DMX data being transmitted.

Proper DMX output configuration ensures a reliable connection between the console and lighting rig, reducing troubleshooting time and allowing for smooth execution during services.
