Timecoding in Avolites allows for precise automated cue execution, ensuring that lighting changes stay perfectly in sync with pre-recorded tracks. By using SMPTE timecode, lighting cues can be triggered automatically without the need for manual operation, making it an essential tool for complex worship productions, time-sensitive sequences, and broadcast environments.
Understanding SMPTE Timecode
SMPTE timecode is simply an audio signal coming from the tracks computer. This signal acts as a timing reference, telling the console exactly when to fire cues based on the song’s progression. To use SMPTE timecode with Avolites, a T2, T3, or all-in-one console is required, as these devices include a physical LTC input for receiving timecode. You can download timecode files here to put into your playback machine.
Recording and Editing Timecoded Cues
Once timecode is enabled and connected to a cue list:
1. Start playback of the track to begin recording.
2. Manually trigger each cue in real-time as the song progresses (this is known as “punching in” cues).
3. Each cue’s exact timestamp is saved, ensuring they fire automatically in future runs.
After recording, time adjustments can be made directly in the timecode view:
• Editing timestamps allows cues to be nudged forward or backward for tighter synchronization.
• Manual entry of timecode values ensures perfect alignment with key song moments.
