A positive relationship between FOH engineer and system engineer is essential. The dynamics of this partnership rely on communication, mutual understanding, and technical collaboration. Doing these things well makes sure the audience gets the best possible experience no matter the service.
Mutual Respect
FOH engineers and system engineers should work closely together. Their relationship is key to achieving a great sound. Part of this is understanding that the system engineer respects the FOH engineer’s desires and final decisions. All of this is in the name of the best quality sound. They know that, while both may have different opinions, the goal is to serve the needs of the listener. System engineers adjust the PA based on the FOH engineer’s preferences. Open communication and humility is vital to ensuring this is done well.
Adaptability
Over time, FOH engineers and system engineers will learn from each other’s preferences and working styles. This knowledge aids quick decisions in the heat of a service. This also allows for anticipatory adjustments to sound based on changes in the environment such as temperature or humidity or various other factors.
Technical Collaboration and Trust
Trust between these two roles allows the FOH engineer to focus on mixing and to be confident in their mix. The system engineer will handle sound and any issues that might arise. This trust is built over time through consistent and effective collaboration.
Handling Dual Roles
Now, you might be thinking… “I’m both of those!” and that’s entirely possible. In fact, it’s very common. Managing that dual role well is a chore in it of itself, but the main principles remain the same. There’s still a need to understand the macro and micro parts of your environment. Macro being the system as a whole including your speaker set up, and the micro being the actual mixing. Maintain a broad perspective and make detailed adjustments as needed.
