Jeff Sandstrom dives into the setup and workflow of using Waves LV1. Jeff begins to explain how he will dissect a mix from a Chris Tomlin concert, specifically with the song “Holy Forever.” He aims to give you an insight into how he uses LV1 and offer tips for improving your mix in your church.

Workflow and Layout on LV1

LV1 offers a customizable layout. This is essential for managing your inputs well. Custom layers can help you group channels by instrument type. This means you could have a layer for drums, a layer for guitars, keys etc… This method allows for quick access and better control while mixing live.
  • Jeff uses a “show” layer that includes key inputs for managing transitions during live services
  • Channels can be color-coded and labeled for easy identification

Processing with Plugins

LV1 uses an entirely plugin-based approach. This allows for more flexible and customized sound. This also enables users to mix and match plugins to achieve your desired sound.
  • Users aren’t locked into a single channel strip sound.
  • Plugins can be changed easily to add different textures and collors.
  • The combination of default and additional plugins can help enhance the mix.

Approach to Mixing

Jeff’s approach is personal to him which means that you should adapt these recommendations to your specific needs and environment. There’s no 100% right or wrong way to do things, it all comes from trial and error.
  • Jeff mixes live with minimal soloing.
  • Focus on blending instruments as a cohesive unit.
  • The overall sound is more important than each individual input in isolation.
