Jeff Sandstrom breaks down his entire mix on Waves LV1 using tracks from a Chris Tomlin concert he mixed previously. From drums to vocals and more, each section gives you an in-depth insight and practical tips to improve your sound this weekend. Whether beginner or pro, this course can help to enhance your mix.

Drum Mixing Techniques

Learn to mix drums by blending the whole kit rather than focusing on individual parts. Custom layers and routing can help manage drum channels well. Apply plugins like API 2500 and Scheps Parallel Particles to enhance your drum sound. Adding parallel compression gives depth and impact without drowning the mix.

Integrating Bass Guitar

Blend the Bass with Drums. Make sure the bass guitar fits the drum mix. This creates a strong low-end base. Use light compression and use the R-Bass plugin to enhance frequency. Adjust bass levels in context with other instruments to maintain balance.

Adding Guitars

Strategically introduce electric guitars to enhance dynamic song structures. Use Fairchild 660 and parallel processing for tonal enhancement. Blend live and track acoustics for a fuller sound. Use SSL plugins for EQ and compression.

Keyboard Integration

Separate piano and other keyboard elements are used for precise control. Mix synth leads, pads, and other keyboard parts to support the whole mix. Understand song arrangements to effectively manage transitions and dynamic changes.

Vocal Processing

Assign dedicated faders for lead, background, and gang vocals. Simulate a large group singing to encourage audience participation. Apply EQ, compression, and effects to achieve a polished vocal sound. Add reverb and delay in combination with other plugins to enhance your vocals.

Main Bus Processing

Use plugins like NLS Bus, Kramer Pie Compressor, and Abbey Road TG Mastering Chain to shape the overall mix. Apply mastering plugins sparingly to add final polish and sparkle.
