The Art of Skillful Playing
Description
This video takes your chord vocabulary to the next level with advanced embellishments designed to add depth, color, and movement to your playing—especially in a worship context.
We start by introducing a powerful “poly-chord” approach: building a major 9 sound by stacking a simple major triad over the four chord in your left hand. You’ll see how rolling, stabbing, and shaping those voicings instantly brings lift and expression to the one, four, two, and six chords—without ever feeling busy or distracting.
From there, we break down two signature embellishments that have become favorites among seasoned players: the Templan and the Goodlo.
The Templan adds quick, tasteful movement using a second-inversion triad, a step-up to the minor, and a subtle finger stab that gives the line its unique character.
The Goodlo expands the idea even further, combining the Templan with rich sus and add-4 shapes for a longer, more expressive run that works beautifully over the six chord.
Throughout the lesson, you’ll learn when and how to use these techniques so they enhance the moment on Sunday—not overpower it. You’ll also get practical guidance on choosing inversions, shaping right-hand movement, and applying these ideas to the core chords you play every week.
If you’re ready to add sophistication and soul to your playing while staying grounded in worship, this video will open up a whole new palette of sound.
