Basic Piano Embellishments & Fills

201 Worship Piano & Keys

Description

In this video, we dive into the foundational embellishments and fills every keys player should know—simple, repeatable movements you can start using immediately on a C chord.

You’ll learn how small adjustments in finger movement can completely change the feel of a sustained chord. We walk through core techniques like subtle index-and-ring-finger motion, tasteful “stabs” that add lift without pulling attention, and the pinky-five hit that sets up melodic motion.

From there, we look at more expressive techniques—mirroring your right-hand intervals with your left-hand thumb for those smooth “sus-type” moments, and exploring major 6/7 and minor 6/7 movement that instantly adds color, mood, or tension in a worship setting.

You’ll also see a go-to walk-down that’s perfect for long endings, transitions, and those big reflective moments at the end of a set.

This lesson is all about building vocabulary—giving you reliable, musical tools that help your playing feel more connected and more skillful. And in the next video, we’ll take things further with two advanced embellishments inspired by players who helped shape this approach.
