Piano Embellishments and Fills

4 Videos 32 minutes 201 Worship

This course is designed to help worship keyboardists move beyond “just playing the chords” and into the art of playing skillfully before the Lord. Whether your parts feel stiff, empty, or overly simple, this course teaches you how to add life, color, and movement in a way that serves the moment—not distracts from it.

Across the lessons, you’ll learn how to take basic chord shapes and elevate them with tasteful techniques that fit beautifully in a worship setting. We start with foundational embellishments—small finger movements, stabs, walk-downs, mirrored intervals, major/minor 6 and 7 motion, and simple right-hand patterns you can use immediately on a C chord. From there, we build toward more expressive tools like polychords, major 9 voicings, rolling tenths, and left-hand movement that brings depth and texture to the one, two, four, and six chords.

You’ll also learn two signature advanced embellishments—the Templan and the Goodlo—that show how professional players create lift, tension, and release without ever sounding busy. Throughout the course, we emphasize choosing the right inversions, shaping movement with intention, and understanding how these techniques fit into the larger musical and spiritual moment of a worship environment.

Most importantly, this course keeps your heart at the center. Embellishments aren’t about showing off—they’re about stewarding the gift of music, expressing honest emotion, and helping people engage with God without distraction.

If you’re ready to grow from playing the right notes to playing skillfully, this course will give you the vocabulary, confidence, and practical tools to make every chord feel more alive.
