The Prerequisite for Leadership

Jeff Sandstrom and Todd Elliott, Founder of FILO, discuss leading as a volunteer. Leadership isn’t just the typical formal role that some might think. Rather, it’s a 360 degree mentality. The first step to 360 degree leadership is to build trust. This is done through actions and your attitude.

Building Trust

Trust forms the foundation for effective teamwork and successful leadership. Jeff and Todd discuss how being trustworthy is in your control through your actions and your words. Trust is crucial for leading others whether it be your peers, subordinates or superiors.
  • Show up on time and be prepared.
  • Consistently fulfill commitments
  • Treat others with respect and integrity.

The Long Game

Trustworthiness is not built overnight but rather through consistent actions over time. It’s about showing reliability in both high-pressure situations and everyday interactions.
  • Assume the best in others to foster a positive environment.
  • Avoid saying "I told you so" to maintain respect and trust.

Support Team Members

Being a trustworthy volunteer also means being supportive and ready to assist others. This helps in creating a cohesive and collaborative team environment.
  • Help others when your tasks are complete.
  • Be proactive in offering assistance.
  • Cultivate a team spirit by being a reliable and helpful presence.

Recognizing and Encouraging Others

Trust grows in an environment where team members recognize and encourage each other. This includes giving and receiving appreciation and support.
  • Compliment and acknowledge others' efforts.
  • Show interest in your team members' lives and well-being.
  • Encourage and uplift your peers regularly.
