- Diffraction is where sound bends around objects. The process of diffraction creates delays, changes the timbre, and decreases the energy of the sound wave. As an audio engineer, diffraction is something you have to be aware of.
- Flutter occurs when two parallel surfaces are far enough apart that each reflection starts feeling and sounding distinct rather than combining with the direct sound. Flutter sounds more like an echo, is rapid, and unpleasing to the ear.
Pro Tip: While diffraction can create challenges, it is not always a bad thing. It can actually be used strategically to achieve a desired dispersion of sound.
