Jeff focuses on mixing the band instruments to create a cohesive and full-sounding mix. This includes bass, acoustic guitar, electric guitars, keys, pads, and a sub-bass track. Each instrument is processed to ensure clarity, proper EQ, and a balance within the overall mix.
Bass Guitar Processing
Processing the bass guitar is aimed at achieving a pointed and clear sound using EQ and compression. Jeff adjusts EQ to boost the 4-5kHz and 2kHz zones for clarity, adding some bottom end. He also uses a 4:1 compression to level out inconsistencies and maintain control over the dynamic range.
Acoustic Guitar Processing
Jeff’s aim is to remove unwanted noise and enhance clarity in the acoustic guitar’s sound. Using a high pass filter, he removes low-end noise and rumble. Some EQ adjustments cutting around 400Hz can reduce boxiness, adding top-end sparkle.
Electric Guitars Processing
Two electric guitars are used in this mix, processed to complement each other. One provides a lead tone and the other adds some body. Both guitars should blend well together to sound like one full instrument.
- Electric 1: Brighter lead tone, slight EQ cut around 3kHz, high-pass filter around 80-100Hz.
- Electric 2: Darker supporting tone, EQ adjustments are used to accentuate fundamental frequencies.
Keys Processing
Minimal EQ adjustments are used to enhance the presence of the keys in the mix while maintaining as much of a natural sound as possible.
- EQ Adjustments: Add top-end sparkle and cut around 500Hz to reduce boxiness.
Pads and Sub-Bass Processing
Pads are essentially the glue of the mix, while the sub-bass track is adjusted to fill out the low end.
- Pads: A high-pass filter and a top-end boost should be used for sparkle.
- Sub-Bass: Boost low frequencies to enhance sub energy, ensuring gain is balanced.
