Leading up focuses on how volunteers and staff can lead and influence those above them. Leadership is influence, not position. Jeff and Todd Elliott, Founder of FILO, give advice on how to communicate and build trust with leaders above you.

Leadership isn't about a specific position. It's about the ability to influence others. This is true, regardless of where you are on the chart. Good leadership means gaining trust and using it to improve decisions and processes.

To lead up effectively, it's important to speak in a way that senior leaders can understand. Translate technical jargon into language that fits the church’s mission and vision.

Use simple, relatable language when communicating technical needs.
Focus on how your suggestions or needs help the organization's mission.
Provide context and explanations that resonate with senior leaders' perspectives.

Conflict and Last-Minute Changes

When faced with unexpected changes or conflicts, effective communication is crucial. Timely updates and clear information can prevent misunderstandings. They also help manage tense situations.

Communicate issues and updates promptly to keep everyone informed.
Maintain transparency about challenges and the steps being taken to address them.
