Power Amplifiers

Power Amplifiers are essential to a PA system. Power Amps take the signal from your console, and convert the signal to the proper output for the speakers themselves.

Key Points:
  • The amplifier lives in the signal chain between the mixer and loudspeaker.
  • There are many types of amplifiers. In this video, we see the d&b D20 amp. In many amps, the signal typically starts with an XLR signal in, then passes through the DSP system, which is tied to the front display for controlling settings. It then passes through the power module for post processing into the amplifier stages and out through the NL4 cable feeding into the speakers.
  • When the signal goes into the amp it is a low voltage signal. Once it hits the amplifier stages, that is where the signal is amplified for volume output to the loudspeakers.

Pro Tip: Once you are working with more than one or two amps, having power amps that have network capabilities will be come increasingly helpful! This way when you make a change to one amp, it can be applied to all amps in the system.
