You don’t need all of the fancy gear and outboard processing to get good drum sounds. Phil Bledsoe walks through his approach to mixing drums with the tools you have, and introduces some new ideas you can implement into your mixes. 

Key Points:
  • Remember, no drum mix is complete until it’s in context of the rest of the band. The drums have a relationship with the rest of the band too.
  • Try Phil’s 6/3 rule: 63Hz and 6.3KHz.
  • Don’t be afraid to take a setting to the extreme, it’s helpful to know what a setting is doing and what it sounds like.
  • Save time by copying settings from similar sized drum mics, and pasting them to the next. It might not work perfectly, but it’s saved you a few steps.
