Sometimes the best approach to cleaning up our mix is the simplest. Applying a highpass filter to select individual inputs can take a mix from muddy to clear in just a few steps. Jeff walks us through an example in this video using Waves plugins.

Key Points:
  • Using a highpass filter on most inputs (besides bass guitar and the kick drum) can clean up mud quickly.

  • Compression can help tame and control the volume of a bass guitar. Even just 2-3dB can make a significant difference.

  • A layered piano can sometimes be difficult to control, but using an EQ to help shape the fundamental sound can help drastically.
